Life is usually a delicate balance of trying to look like a professional equestrian: the kind who has coordinated saddle pads and doesn't have hay in her hair: while actually living in a state of constant, glorious chaos. I’ll admit, there are days when I walk into the yard and wonder if I’m actually running a pony spa or just a very expensive mud-distribution centre. We’ve all been there, right? You have a "quiet moment" planned with your horse, only to find they’ve decided that rolling in the one damp patch of the field was the highlight of their afternoon.
And that is exactly why I became obsessed with finding materials that actually work for us: the real-life horse owners who deal with rain, grit, and the occasional "squirting season" (you know the one, where the hose becomes your best friend and worst enemy simultaneously). While I’ll always have a soft spot for the traditional feel of BioThane®, there’s a new hero in the workshop here in East Sussex that has completely stolen my heart.
Enter the Rope Revolution. But not just any rope. We’re talking about PPM.
THE SCIENCE OF SOFTNESS
Why PPM is the hero you didn't know you needed
If you’d asked me a few years ago about rope, I probably would have thought of those scratchy, heavy things that get stiff when they’re wet and eventually start to smell like a damp basement. PPM: or Polypropylene Multifilament, if we’re being fancy: is the total opposite. It’s a bit of a marvel, really. It’s incredibly lightweight, it doesn't absorb water (which means no more heavy, soggy leads!), and it’s rot-proof.
But honestly, the best part? It feels like silk in your hands but has the strength of something much more industrial. It’s that duality I love: something that looks beautiful and feels gentle but is "tough as nails" when it matters. When I’m sitting in the workshop, hand-tying these pieces, I’m constantly amazed at how vibrant the colours stay, even after being dragged through the Sussex mud.

Patsy looking particularly regal in her purple rope halter: mostly because she hasn't realized there's a fresh mud puddle behind her yet.
THE 6MM WHISPER: COMMUNICATION WITHOUT THE CLUNK
Precision and lightness in the palm of your hand
Let’s talk about our PPM Basic Round 6mm. I use this specifically for our PPM rope halter (aka: the bit of handmade horse gear that makes me feel like I’ve got my life together at 5 AM… even if I absolutely do not by 9 AM), and it has completely changed how I communicate with my horse, Patsy. You see, a rope halter shouldn't be a blunt instrument. It should be a refined tool.
Because the 6mm rope is so lightweight, it sits almost weightlessly on the horse's head until you need to send a signal. It’s about a whisper, not a shout. When you’re working on that subtle lightness: the kind where you just think about a turn and they follow: having a halter that doesn't "muffle" your communication with heavy brass buckles or thick, stiff material is a game-changer.
I hand-tie every single one of these here in East Sussex, ensuring the knots are exactly where they need to be to encourage responsiveness without being harsh. It’s that perfect balance of "quiet strength." Plus, because they are so thin and flexible, they are the easiest things in the world to tuck into a pocket or a grooming kit. (Though, let’s be honest, mine usually end up hanging over my shoulder while I’m distracted by something else...).
THE 14MM ANCHOR: GROUNDWORK WITH GRAVITAS
Finding the "feel" in every movement
Now, if the 6mm is the whisper, our PPM Double Braided Rope 14mm is the steady conversation. I use this for our groundwork lead rope options (including a ppm rope lead that holds its shape beautifully without turning into a soggy, sulky noodle), and the "feel" is unlike anything else. If you’ve ever used a lead rope that felt like a piece of dead string, you’ll know exactly what I mean when I say "feel" is everything.
At 14mm, this rope has a substantial weight to it. Not a "my arms are going to fall off" weight, but a deliberate, balanced weight that carries your energy down the line. When you wiggle the rope, the movement travels clearly all the way to the horse. It doesn't get "lost" in the air.
I’ll admit, I’m a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to the ends of these ropes. We hand-splice and finish them so they feel smooth and look incredibly professional. There’s something so satisfying about the way the double-braided texture slides through your hands: no friction burns, no roughness, just a secure, confident grip. It’s the kind of gear that makes you feel like you actually know what you’re doing, even on those days when your horse is convinced that a rustling leaf is a fire-breathing dragon.

The texture of the double-braid is honestly a dream to hold: even when you're wearing gloves and shivering in February!
FROM THE WORKSHOP TO THE FIELD
Everything handcrafted with love in East Sussex
There’s a certain magic in knowing exactly where your gear comes from. Every time I sit down at my bench, I’m thinking about the horses (and the people) who will be using these. I’m thinking about the care instructions that will keep them looking new, and the about us story that started with just a few rolls of material and a lot of passion. This is the stuff I always wish existed when I was chasing that "5 AM calm" feeling—without sacrificing the "muddy reality" requirement for lightweight horse gear that actually scrubs up like nothing happened.
Everything we do at Ponies & Pups is bespoke. It’s not about mass production; it’s about creating that one perfect halter or lead that matches your horse’s personality (and maybe your favorite boots). We’ve organized our offerings into four distinct collections to help you find your "vibe":
- The Essential Collection: The "bread and butter" of any yard. Durable, reliable, and ready for work.
- The POP Collection: For the bold. Think vibrant neons and high-contrast colours that say, "We’ve arrived!"
- The Whisper Collection: Muted tones and soft textures. This is where the 6mm PPM really shines.
- The Signature Collection: The ultimate in craftsmanship and style: the pieces that make people stop and ask, "Where did you get that?"

AND FOR THE PUPS...
Something premium is brewing
I couldn't write a blog post without mentioning the "Pups" part of our name, could I? While the horses have been enjoying the PPM revolution for a while now, I have a little secret I’ve been sitting on. (Because apparently I love a "big reveal"… and by big reveal I mean me, in my dressing gown, scribbling notes at 5:12 AM while the kettle boils.)
PPM Premium Dog Collars are coming soon!
I’ve been testing these out with our resident "Quality Control" team (and by that, I mean the dogs who think every walk is an Olympic event), and the results are amazing. They are lightweight, waterproof: perfect for those "let's jump in the pond" moments: and they look incredibly chic. And yes—this is where the custom rope dog leads chat starts creeping in too, because once you’ve held PPM in your hands it’s hard not to start dreaming up the perfect custom dog lead to match your dog’s chaotic little personality. They’ll be joining our Classic BioThane® Range very shortly, so keep those eyes peeled!
FINDING YOUR FEEL
Whether you’re working on advanced liberty moves or just need a lead rope that doesn't turn into a soggy mess the moment it touches the ground, PPM is a total game-changer. It’s about more than just equipment; it’s about the connection. It’s about that quiet moment in the forest or the breakthrough in the school when everything just... clicks.
I’d love to hear which colours you’re eyeing up, honestly, picking the colour stories is my favourite part of the whole process. Are you a "Whisper" kind of person, or are you ready to "POP"?
Right now, I can hear a certain chestnut mare demanding her dinner with some very unsubtle hoof-banging, so I’d better go. But I’ll be back at the workshop tomorrow, rope in hand, ready to create something beautiful for you.
See you in the yard! 🦄✨

A little bit of blue to brighten a grey day (because life is too short for boring tack.)
