Why BioThane® is the Best Choice for Dogs & Horses
Sophia Pybus

Let's be honest, there are moments in life when you discover something so brilliantly practical that you wonder how you ever managed without it. For me, that moment came on a particularly soggy Tuesday morning in East Sussex, standing in a field with two very muddy dogs (Lily and Milo, naturally) and a leather lead that had seen better days. Much better days. It smelled like a swamp, felt like cardboard, and was currently contributing absolutely nothing to my quality of life.

That's when I made the switch to BioThane®.

And I haven't looked back since, unless you count the time Jessie very politely informed me that BioThane® is "fine"… but she’d actually rather hold out for our new Precision Rope Collars. (They’re not available yet, but they’re coming really soon—consider this your little teaser. And yes, she’s a spaniel with very strong opinions about "new-fangled" gear, bless her.)

What Actually Is BioThane®?

Right, so before I get carried away waxing poetic about waterproof dog leads, BioThane® is essentially a coated webbing that combines the strength of nylon with a polyurethane coating that makes it completely waterproof, flexible, and ridiculously easy to clean. It looks a bit like leather, feels softer than nylon, and performs better than both in nearly every real-world scenario.

Think of it as the overachiever of the tack world. The straight-A student who also captains the football team and plays violin. Annoying, really, how good it is.

Why I Actually Switched (And Why Jessie Hasn't)

I'll admit it, I was a leather loyalist for years. There's something romantic about traditional tack, isn't there? The smell, the patina, the sense that you're connected to centuries of horsemanship. But then reality kicked in, usually in the form of:

  • Lily rolling in something unspeakable and transferring it directly to her custom dog collar
  • Milo deciding the river was a brilliant place for a swim mid-walk
  • My leather reins going stiff as a board after one particularly wet hack
  • Spending more time conditioning leather than actually riding

Jessie, my older spaniel, is still clinging to her "old faithful" for now… but she’s made it very clear she’s saving her excitement for our new Precision Rope Collars. (Not available yet, but honestly—soon.) She suits the whole classic countryside vibe, to be fair. But Lily and Milo? They're all about the vibrant, easy-care life. And honestly, so am I these days.

BioThane® vs. Leather: The Mud Test

Here's where it gets interesting. Leather enthusiasts will tell you it's "breathable" and "natural" and develops "character" over time. And they're not wrong, leather does develop character. Unfortunately, that character often includes:

  • Water damage: Leather absorbs moisture like a sponge, which leads to stiffening, cracking, and eventual breakdown
  • Maintenance demands: Regular conditioning, oiling, and general fussing about to keep it supple
  • Odour issues: Once leather gets properly wet and stays that way, it develops a certain... shall we say bouquet?
  • Bacterial growth: Damp leather is basically a holiday resort for bacteria and mildew

BioThane®, on the other hand, just wipes clean. That's it. That's the maintenance routine. After Lily's morning constitutional through the muddiest field in Sussex, I literally just wipe her BioThane® dog lead with a damp cloth and we're done. No conditioning oils, no leaving it to dry naturally while hoping it doesn't go rigid, no smell that makes visitors wrinkle their noses.

BioThane in a nutshell: colourful rolls, a bit of water, and absolutely zero drama—this is the “wipe it and crack on” kind of waterproof.

BioThane® vs. Nylon: The Comfort Question

"But wait," I hear you say, "isn't nylon already waterproof and low-maintenance?" Well, yes. But here's the thing about nylon, it's about as forgiving as a particularly strict headmistress. It's strong, sure, but it:

  • Frays easily: Those fuzzy edges after a few months of use? Classic nylon
  • Burns skin: Ever had nylon rope burn through your hands or, heaven forbid, across your horse's sensitive areas? Not pleasant
  • Absorbs odours: Despite being synthetic, nylon somehow manages to hold onto eau de wet dog rather impressively
  • Stiffens in cold weather: Winter walks with a nylon lead are an exercise in wrestling with a frozen rope

BioThane® is genuinely soft and flexible, even in freezing temperatures. The polyurethane coating means it doesn't absorb water or odours (Milo has tested this theory extensively), and it won't give you or your animals rope burn during enthusiastic moments. My waterproof BioThane® dog collar for Lily has literally never rubbed, even when she's decided that pulling towards every interesting smell is her life's calling.

The Dog Perspective: Custom Collars That Actually Work

Lily and Milo both wear custom BioThane® dog collars from our Classic Range, and I can genuinely say they're the best investment I've made for them. Here's why:

Durability Without Bulk: BioThane® is incredibly strong (it's rated for much higher tensile strength than leather), but it's also lightweight. Lily barely notices she's wearing a collar, except when she catches her reflection and clearly admires her fashion choices.

Safety in All Weather: Whether we're walking in rain, snow, or the standard British drizzle, their BioThane® dog leads never get slippery or difficult to grip. The coating provides excellent purchase even when wet, which is rather important when Milo spots a squirrel and decides today's the day he'll actually catch one.

Colour That Lasts: Unlike nylon that fades in the sun or leather that darkens and discolours, BioThane® keeps its vibrant colour. Lily's been sporting her bright teal collar for two years now, and it still looks brand new. (Jessie's leather one, meanwhile, has developed a lovely patina, which is code for "it's gone a bit murky.")

Six bright collars, because if you’re going to be dragged through a muddy hedge by a determined spaniel, you might as well look cute doing it.

The Horse Perspective: What We’ve Got Right Now (And What’s Coming Soon)

I want to tell you all about our BioThane® reins (because yes, I’m making them happen)… but at the moment, they’re still very much in the “coming soon” category.

What we do have available right now—and what I’m slightly obsessed with, because it solves a really annoying little everyday problem—is our BioThane® Adjustable Fillet Strings from The Classic Range.

They’re:

  • Wipe-clean (because nobody has time for crusty, soggy fillet strings—let’s be honest)
  • ADJUSTABLE (which is the bit I’m weirdly proud of… and genuinely hard to find)
  • Tough as nails, but still soft and flexible.

And because I’m in my “please try these, I think you’ll love them” era, they’re currently on a special introductory price of £12 (RRP £15).

So yes—more BioThane® horse gear is absolutely on its way. But for now, if you want that easy-clean, colourful, practical magic on the yard today… the Classic Range fillet strings are your starting point.

The Collections: Colour With Purpose

When we design our collections here in East Sussex, we think about more than just aesthetics, though let's be honest, the aesthetics are rather important too. Each collection has its own personality:

The Essential Collection: Everyday heroes with that “grab it and go” energy. Simple, solid, and still very much in the pretty camp.

The POP Collection: Bold, vibrant colours for dogs and horses who like to make an entrance. Lily and Milo's spiritual home, frankly.

The Whisper Collection: Soft, muted tones for those quiet moments, the early morning hacks, the peaceful evening feeds. Jessie would absolutely approve if she were into colourful gear (she's not, bless her).

The Signature Collection: Classic combinations that work for everyone, even the traditionalists who are BioThane®-curious but not quite ready to commit to electric blue.

All handcrafted, all designed to survive real life—mud, rain, enthusiastic dogs, and horses who think every puddle is a personal challenge.

The Practical Bit: Why It Actually Matters

Look, I could spend another thousand words waxing lyrical about colour theory and design philosophy, and trust me, I often do, but here's what really matters:

BioThane® gear makes daily life with dogs and horses easier. And when you're juggling multiple animals, a business, and the general chaos of rural life, easier is rather precious.

It's waterproof without being stiff. It's durable without being heavy. It's low-maintenance without sacrificing quality. And it's handcrafted right here in East Sussex by people (me, mostly) who actually use this gear every single day.

This close-up is my love letter to the details—solid hardware, neat rivets, and that “yes, this will survive real life” finish.

Jessie might not be convinced, she's perfectly happy with her traditional leather collar and her general air of "we did things better in my day", but Lily and Milo are living their best BioThane® lives. And honestly? So am I.

If you want to explore our full range of BioThane® dog leads, custom dog collars, and our currently-available horse gear (hello, Classic Range fillet strings), have a look at our shop. And if you need specific care instructions (spoiler: it's basically just "wipe it clean"), we've got you covered here.

Right, I'm off: Lily (snuggle-loving Jack Russell x Pug) is giving me that look which means it's time for our afternoon walk, and Milo (mischievous Sprocker) has already retrieved his lead from the hook. Even Jessie's stirring, though she'll pretend she doesn't actually enjoy walks these days.
